Mass has changed the arithmetic

An attacking drone can cost a few thousand pounds. The interceptor fired to stop it can cost hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions. An adversary willing to launch in numbers can exhaust a nation's air defences long before it runs out of airframes. The defender loses the exchange even when it wins the engagement.

The environment those engagements happen in has also closed down. Satellite navigation is jammed and spoofed as a matter of routine. Data links are contested, and every transmission is a beacon that can be detected, located and returned to sender. A system that depends on a signal from somewhere else is a system that stops working at precisely the moment it is needed.
